For all the material in the comics Flying Solo, Super Duper Ham, Martian Debut and On The Promenade, I drew each element of each panel on paper and scanned them into electronic form separately. This process made it possible to build, layer, and edit page compositions, or to replace specific elements. It also left me with the original artwork piling up in his studio. Some of the pictures held up individually, but most were nothing more than parts of a whole.
I combined many of these partial images, as well as some previously unpublished work, in a series of handmade collages. New compositions were made with a precision knife and a glue stick. Layers of paint then gave atmosphere to the new images and separated the foreground from the background. Various pens brought out linear details and markers added other embellishments. In contrast to the careful process used for the comic books, the creation of these collages was fluid and spontaneous. After seven weeks, 122 finished collages became a body of work called Cut and Pasted.
